Fire Safety Health Care

Are You Putting Lives At Risk?

Several recent incidents have highlighted just how quickly fires can take hold and what a serious effect they can have on lives, property and business. Fire knows no boundaries, has no respect for history, preservation orders or the essential services a business may provide. And yet, the preparation of formal procedures within many organisations is often put off or simply ignored.

How well would your fire and emergency procedures stand up in the event of a fire?

Take our Fire Health Check - Don’t put fire safety on the back burner

Fires generally start due to three main reasons:

  • They are started deliberately
  • Lack of awareness
  • Carelessness

It is estimated that 80% of businesses that suffer a fire go into liquidation within three years. The average cost to a business suffering a fire is in excess of £60,000.

Recent changes to legislation now place the emphasis firmly on reducing the risk of a fire as opposed to having procedures to evacuate in the event of a fire. All employers are required to prove they are reducing risks as far as is practicable and dealing with the remaining risks effectively, by carrying out an effective Fire Risk Assessment. All those with responsibility for the management of a workplace need to ensure that they have a valid Fire Risk Assessment conducted by a competent person and made available to any interested parties upon request.

Under current laws, you must:

  • Carry out a fire-risk assessment identifying any possible dangers and risks;
  • Consider those who may be especially at risk;
  • Eliminate or reduce the risk from fire as far as is reasonably practicable and provide general fire precautions to deal with any possible risk left;
  • Take other measures to make sure there is protection if flammable or explosive materials are used or stored:
  • Create a plan to deal with any emergency, and in most cases, keep a record of your findings and review your findings when necessary.

In premises with special circumstances who may have many people at risk, such as care homes, hospitals or large cinemas, you may need more expert help.
