4See have trained consultants who are able to fulfill the role of the Appointed Person under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.

One person should be appointed to have overall control of the lifting operation and to act on behalf of the organisation requiring the load to be moved. The Appointed Person must have adequate training, experience and technical knowledge to carry out the role competently.

The duties of the Appointed Person include:

• Planning
• Selection of cranes
• Selection of lifting gear
• Selection of personnel
• Instruction and supervision
• Consultation with other responsible bodies if necessary
• Ensuring that adequate inspection and maintenance of lifting equipment has been carried out
• Ensuring that there is an effective procedure for reporting defects and incidents and taking any necessary corrective action
• Responsibility for the organisation, control and safety of the lifting operation
