Developing Safe Systems of Work

Aims and objectives

The Developing Safe Systems of Work course aims to provide delegates with:
• A working understanding of the legal requirements and practical skills in establishing a safe system of work.
• The ability to carry out job safety analysis
• The knowledge to make informed decisions avoiding the risk averse approach and encouraging the management and control of risk.
• The ability to carry out risk assessments and method statements.
All of this is combined with the objective of enabling the delegates to develop and manage a safe system of work for their own personnel and analyse the suitability of those of their contractors.

Course content

The course covers developing safe systems, task assessment, method statements, hazard identification and risk assessment, establishing safe methods, system implementation, permits to work and system monitoring.

Personnel with supervisory or management responsibilities.

At the core of effective safety management, establishing a safe system of work is a manager’s most important function. The successful manager should be able to combine the needs and practicalities of the job with the safety of the workforce and legal compliance, by systematically examining a task to identify the hazards, assess the risk and so ensuring that hazards are eliminated and risks controlled.
