General Fire Safety
Aims and objectives
This course has been developed to give employees a broad understanding of fire safety issues in the workplace. The course also deals with general fire risks and identifies accepted fire safety standards which should be adopted at work. In addition this course also offers theoretical training on how to select and correctly use fire extinguishers/fire blankets in the event of a fire emergency, as well as detailing your company’s particular fire emergency/evacuation procedures.
On successful completion of this course delegates should be able to:
• Identify fire hazards and their potential risks in the workplace
• Actively participate in maintaining day-to-day fire safety standards within the workplace by improving housekeeping standards and hazard reporting
• Take appropriate action in the event of a fire emergency
• Select and correctly use fire extinguishers and fire blankets in a fire emergency
• Demonstrate the correct emergency evacuation procedure for their workplace.
Course content
This course covers:
• Overview of fire (what fire is, why it happens, common mistakes, how to reduce the risk).
• Different types/classes of fire
• Identifying workplace fire hazards (how fire risks are created, how to identify and remove them, who to report fire hazards to, and how to maintain evacuation routes).
• Fire safety procedures and equipment (raising the alarm, evacuation, muster points).
• Identification and use of fire extinguishers and fire blankets (how to pick the right extinguisher, how to use it, how to correctly use a fire blanket).
